Florian Motlik (Codeship) set up the Vienna DevOps / Security user group in February 2014. They meet discussing DDoS attacks, high availability, continuous deployment, TLS Security and all kinds of cloud services, amongst other things. Infrequently the DevOps / Security group collaborates with the System Architects Group who, incidentally, also meet at sektor5.
How do you stay in contact with your members?
Mostly using the Meetup.com mailinglist feature. And Twitter, using the #devops hashtag, as we don’t have a designated Twitter account.
How did your user group evolve?
The initial hurdles were finding great talks and motivating people to show up, which – I guess – are pretty standard issues when you start a user group.
How many members does your user group have today, how many show up at meetups on average?
There are about 105 members in our Meetup.com group and ~30 people showing up at the meetups.
How much time do you spend moderating your group on a weekly basis?
About 2 hours a week.
Are you planning something special for 2015?
We’re actually thinking about organizing a DevOps related conference in Vienna.
The next DevOps / Security user group meetup will take place on the 26th of January.
