A twenty people turned up last Tuesday February 24th to attend the official kick-off of Vienna Law Clinics‘ practices. Vienna Law Clinics is a group of law students and graduates offering free legal counseling to startups, in collaboration with the law firm Herbst Kinsky Rechtsanwälte GmbH.
In a panel discussion and Q&A session – led by seasoned startup founder Florian Dorfbauer – the attendees got an invaluable insight in the legal side of entrepreneurial life.
“Picking the right co-founders, finding the right legal form for your company and understanding some core legal concepts are one of the most important things you have to consider when you start a business – Vienna Law Clinics can’t help you with the first but they will enthusiastically help with legal questions!”
Florian Dorfbauer, CEO Usersnap.
Christoph Eichberger, the Creative Director of sektor5, also made sure to check out this new initiative. “Vienna Law Clinics lower the barrier for first time entrepreneurs to seek legal advice on how to properly set up their business. A valuable resource for our community.”
Judith Bauder, Magdalena Biereder, David Weixlbraun, Anna Wegscheider, Eva-Maria Titz, Stephan Rihs, Jonathan Pock, Felix Kernbichler, Kathrin Heiss and Mirjam Hönisch make up the Vienna Law Clinics team together. Asking them what some of the most interesting question were, Stephan Rihs answers: “Should I incorporate as a 1€ GmbH in Germany, or is there a drawback to it? What are some legal ways to avoid paying taxes? And another funny one: How come law students are interested in startups?”
Stephan Rihs: “We think that access to resources by more established institutions is often limited for early stage founders, so we aim to provide an easy, low-key, very approachable and cost-free way of learning a bit more about the legal aspects of starting a business.” To achieve this they even come to meet entrepreneurs in their very co-working spaces!
“In our conversations, we realized that first time founders are really puzzled by the whole incorporation process and the challenge of finding the right legal framework… Another issue people may not be aware of is the need (in the B2C market) to come up with proper Terms of Service before launching their product, eg an online platform. These are two of the areas we’d definitely like to raise awareness in.”
Helga Ţurcanu (AustrianStartups) praised the Vienna Law Clinics’ team – “taking away the fear of legal issues for startups. A great idea and well organized. Will attend their future sessions!”
Vienna Law Clinics have scheduled office hours at sektor5 March 11th between 14:00 and 16:00. In need of legal advice? Secure your slot – free of charge of course – via email@example.com.
