Who would show up at a coworking space on a Sunday instead of spending a lazy day at home or getting active outside? A bunch of aspiring growth hackers, that’s who. Around 50 hopefuls from all kinds of areas – from marketing to advertising to product – met at Sektor5 on June 21 to attend the workshop Growth Hacking and Full Stack Marketing for Startups. Because, let’s be honest, growth hackers don’t need sleep anyway 😉
A very big lure were definitely the speakers:
Patrick Vlaskovits, entrepreneur, startup mentor, author of the NYT bestseller The Lean Entrepreneur and one of the people who coined the term “growth hacking”
Casey Armstrong, inarguably one of the full stack marketing experts out there
Full stack marketers are the polymaths of the marketing world. Not unlike full stack developers they have a very wide variety of skills rather than focusing on just one marketing technique. You can throw PR requests at full stack marketers, dunk them into Google Analytics or have them devise and execute social media campaigns, and they will weather it all. They work creatively and, ideally, write good copy as well.
A growth hacker is a marketer that has moved away from proven, and oftentimes expensive, marketing channels and instead finds new channels to experiment with. Classic marketing works well for products in existing markets, but new markets require disruptive innovation, and this is where growth hacking enters the picture.
Patrick and Casey shared their extensive experience, walking us through the psychology behind growth hacking as well as teaching us about a variety of concrete methods based on case studies from their own sphere of work. Some ideas they mentioned were probably already familiar to attendees versed in media, e.g. Marshall McLuhan’s famous principle the medium is the message. Other areas, like SEO, may have been something that a lot of people have previously shied away from but should now feel confident enough to work on themselves. They introduced us to various tools for SEO, tracking growth, and email marketing.
Patrick and Casey stopped by in Vienna on their Europe-wide workshop tour. Their very last workshop is happening this Thursday at the famous Design Terminal in Budapest and you might still get a ticket for it if you hurry up!
